I am a Swiss person living in Thailand and have seen advertisements for Soliswiss insurance in the Swiss Review. Can you tell me whether subscribing to this insurance makes financial sense? What are the benefits?

Hi there,

Soliswiss is a cooperative society and works on the principle of shared risk, much like insurance providers. You pay an annual or a lifetime fee to join the scheme. If political instability leads to the loss of your livelihood, you can claim a lump-sum benefit of 10,000 Swiss francs.

You pay 60 francs per year in membership fees - or a one-time payment of 750 francs for lifetime membership. You can choose to make additional payments (between CHF 75 and CHF 1050 per annum) to increase your coverage (between CHF 20,000 and CHF 150,000).

Receiving a 10,000-franc benefit can help you relocate to Switzerland in an emergency or bridge a financial gap until you begin earning income again. However, it is important that you clearly understand coverage limitations.

You can only claim a benefit when you lose your economic livelihood or income-earning opportunities, or when you are subjected to political coercion, war or civil unrest. So while this coverage is useful for Swiss citizens residing in countries with unstable political setups, not all Swiss living abroad will benefit from this coverage.

Best regards from Moneyguru
