Hi there. What do you think about the Medpharm managed care policy from Swiss health insurance company SWICA? The idea seems to be that you go to a pharmacy as a first stop and then they refer you to a doctor or specialist if needed. The premiums seem competitive, but how practical is this system in real life? Has anyone used this policy or a similar system?

Hi there,

The pharmacy model of compulsory Swiss health insurance is relatively new. The idea behind this model is that policyholders consult a pharmacist as a first stop. The pharmacist then either prescribes a treatment or refers you to a doctor or specialist.

This model can be beneficial for people who have easier access to a pharmacy than a family doctor or HMO center, for example.

You can compare the costs of pharmacy model policies with those of other kinds of policies using the health insurance comparison on moneyland.ch.
