My wife was in hospital from the middle of december until the middle of January. My health insurance applied deductibles for both years to the benefit they paid out for the hospital bill even though it was just one claim. Does that make sense?

Hi there,

Yes it does. Annual deductibles like those which apply to Swiss compulsory health insurance are deducted from your insurer's liability to repay claims ever calendar year. When you receive medical treatment over two separate calendar years, the deductible is applied twice, even when just one claim is made for the entire treatment.

Best regards from Moneyguru
