IP Address

The term IP is the abbreviated form of Internet Protocol. In principle, every computer, every server, and every other device which connects to the Internet needs to have an IP address. Without an IP address, connecting to the Internet is not possible.

IP addresses in the IPv4 format are widely used. This consists of four values, each of which is made up of as many as three digits between 0 and 255.

Example of an IPv4 address: 198.51.100.0.

The main problem with the IPv4 standard is that even the maximum possible number of combinations still does not provide sufficient IP addresses. For this reason, IPv4 is being phased out in favor of the IPv6 standard.

IPv6 addresses are composed of up to eight values, each of which consists of up to four characters which can include the letters a, b, c, d, e, and f, in addition to numbers.

Example of an IPv6 address: 2001:db8:0:8d3:0:8a2e:70:7344.
