Joint Account

A joint account is a bank account which is shared by two or more individuals. All of the people who open a joint account together must sign the account-opening agreement. In order to close the account, all of the account holders must jointly agree to terminate it.

Each of the people who jointly hold the bank account can make deposits and withdrawals without permission from the other account holders. For this reason, joint accounts are popular as household accounts for families, couples, and roommates.

If one of the holders of a joint account dies, the other holders can continue to access the account, which can be beneficial for couples.

Many Swiss banks provide the option of opening a private account or savings account as a joint account.
