Peering

The term peering refers to the practice of an ISP connecting its network directly to a different network – typically the network of another ISP, a service provider, a hosting provider, or an Internet company. Some ISPs have thousands of different peering connections.

The networks linking different ISPs are often interconnected with each other via Internet exchange points. The DE-CIX in Frankfurt, Germany, is one such Internet exchange point.

The general rule: The more networks can be reached through direct peering, the faster and more stable the Internet connection will be – as long as the peering has sufficient capacity.
