Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)

A real estate investment trust, or REIT, is a tax-privileged trust which owns real estate on behalf of shareholders (called “unit holders” in the United States). REITs are traded both on stock exchanges and over the counter (OTC). A primary benefit of REITs is that a relatively high portion of profits must be paid out to shareholders.

Although REITs are not issued in Switzerland, they are traded on stock exchanges around the world.
