Swisscom Launches New Prepaid Mobile Offers

January 27, 2021 - Ralf Beyeler

Swisscom is updating its prepaid mobile offers and introducing flat fees. Ralf Beyeler from moneyland.ch analyzes the changes in this report.

Swisscom is now offering new prepaid products. Switzerland’s biggest mobile service provider now has four prepaid offers with flat fees. Swisscom is also launching new data bundles and options.

Which new flat-fee offers has Swisscom launched?

Swisscom is launching four prepaid offers with flat fees. All four of these include unlimited local data within Switzerland in their flat fee.

  • For five francs, the inOne mobile prepaid go offer gives you unlimited Internet in Switzerland for 30 days. Swisscom advertises this offer as exceptionally attractive. But the bandwidth of the internet connection is a relatively low 128 Kbps.
  • The Prepaid Flatrate 7 days offer costs 20 francs and is valid for 7 days. The 20-franc flat fee covers unlimited local phone calls in addition to data.
  • The Prepaid Flatrate 30 days costs 65 francs and is valid for 30 days. It also includes unlimited calls within Switzerland.
  • The Prepaid Flatrate 90 days has a 150-franc flat fee and is valid for 90 days. This plan too includes unlimited local phone calls.

Which new prepaid bundles does Swisscom offer?

Swisscom offers five new bundles for local phone calls within Switzerland and for local data within Switzerland.

  • The 500-megabyte data bundle now costs 6.90 francs instead of 8.90 francs.
  • The 2-gigabyte data bundle now costs 19.90 francs. Up until now, Swisscom prepaid users only got 1.5 gigabytes of data for that price.
  • Swisscom now offers a new 5-gigabyte data bundle for 45 francs.
  • The Voice Basic bundle costs 10 francs and gives you 100 minutes of phone calls.
  • The Voice Plus bundle costs 30 francs and lets you make unlimited calls within Switzerland.

All of the above-mentioned bundles are valid for 30 days.

What is happening to the former prepaid offers?

The basic inOne mobile prepaid offer will remain in the product lineup. The previous combo packages will no longer be available to new customers. Existing prepaid combo packages with the automatic renewal option activated are not affected and will remain active.

Verdict by moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

Flat fee offers are practical because they let mobile users access the Internet and/or make phone calls on an unlimited basis. It is not surprising then that a number of mobile service providers are focused on flat fee offers. Now Swisscom is offering prepaid offers with flat fees for the first time.

The 5-franc flat fee is, by Ralf Beyeler’s estimation, primarily a marketing gag. The 128 Kbps Internet connection is too slow for the majority of mobile users. At the most, that bandwidth is sufficient for messaging services like WhatsApp. Video streaming is virtually impossible with that low speed.

It is interesting to observe that the prepaid flat fee bundles are a copy of the prepaid bundles from Sunrise. The 7-day bundle from Sunrise costs 10 centimes less and provides 5G Internet speeds. The 30-day bundle from Swisscom costs 15 francs more than the equivalent bundle from Sunrise, and the 90-day bundle costs 30 francs more than the Sunrise equivalent.

The new flat fee offers are relatively expensive compared to competing offers. Swiss flat fee prepaid mobile offers are available for as little as 40 francs per month.
