Independent Asset Manager (IAM)

An independent asset manager (IAM) is a wealth management service which is not operated by a commercial bank. The term is used synonymously with the term external asset manager (EAM).

Although independent asset managers are not banks, they make use of banking services like bank accounts and custody accounts to hold and invest their clients’ wealth.

In Switzerland there are more than 2000 independent asset managers. On average, there are only 3-4 employees per asset manager. You can find an overview at the relevant associations such as the Association of Swiss Asset Managers (VSV).

It is important that you take your time when choosing an independent asset manager and compare the costs and services of multiple IAMs before you settle on one.
