Major Bank

In Switzerland, universal banks which operate both in Switzerland and outside of Switzerland are classified as major banks.

Banks which fall under this category engage in many different fields of banking, including retail banking, private banking, broker banking and investment banking.

Major banks typically fall under the too big to fail designation. This means that they are subject to tighter regulation than other commercial banks, but also benefit from greater government protection.

UBS and Credit Suisse are two examples of this type of bank.
