Reinsurance is insurance provided by one insurance company to another. In the reinsurance process, one insurance company takes out insurance against possible financial risks from another insurance company.

Simply put, reinsurance is insurance for insurance providers.

Examples of reinsurance providers are Munich Re, based in Germany, and Swiss Re, which is headquartered in Switzerland.
