The representative moneyland.ch survey shows that Swiss are generally content with their lives. But contentment varies between aspects: While participants are very content with their children and parents, they are far less content with the Swiss government.
Security, a flourishing economy, and excellent healthcare: On paper, at least, Swiss enjoy a high living standard. But how content are Switzerland’s residents with their lives? To find out, moneyland.ch conducted a survey and asked them.
The results show that Swiss are generally content with their lives, with an average of 7.4 out of 10 points for overall satisfaction. But contentment varies broadly depending on the individual aspect of life or the institution in question.
Older residents are the most content
The older the age group, the higher the level of contentment. While the average contentment rating for participants between the ages of 18 and 25 is 7.2 points, the average rating for the 50 to 74 age group is 7.6 points. The middle age group, comprised of participants aged 26 to 49, has an average contentment rating of 7.3 points.
There are also some differences between linguistic regions. Participants in German-speaking Switzerland tend to be more content than those in French-speaking Switzerland. While residents of French-speaking Switzerland rated their content with 7.3 points, on average, their German-speaking compatriots have a rating of 7.5 points.
Contentment levels are similar across the genders, though women (7.5 points) are slightly more content than men (7.4 points).
Families are the biggest source of contentment
Participants are most content with their children (8.2 points) and their parents (7.7 points). Contentment with their personal doctor is next in line, with 7.5 points. “Contentment is highest with aspects of life that are linked to family,” observes moneyland.ch editor Dan Urner.
Finances and politics have the poorest ratings
Contentment with aspects related to finances and federal politics looks very different, with participants rating these far less generously. Of all the aspects accounted for in the survey, Swiss are the least content with Swiss politicians (5.4 points). The Swiss Federal Council is second to last, with 5.5 points. Other aspects with which residents are discontent include their personal financial situation (6.0 points) and their salaries (6.1 points).
“Not surprisingly, wealthier participants are more content with their financial situations,” says Dan Urner. Residents with less than 20,000 francs of wealth rated their contentment with their personal financial situation with just 4.9 points, on average. The contentment rating from residents with 1 million francs of wealth or more is far more positive, at 7.9 points. Get a free overview of the results of the Swiss satisfaction survey 2026 by email.
