A transfer agent is a financial services provider which facilitates the tracking of a publicly traded company’s stock and bond holders.
Transfer agents issue certificates and also track changes in certificate ownership. They assist shareholders in the event of certificates being lost, damaged or stolen. In some cases, a transfer agent also handles payment of dividends, interest and other investment returns.
Companies may act as their own transfer agents, but typically make use of services provided by banks or trusts which act as transfer agents.
