The term 5G, as it relates to telecommunications, denotes a standard for fifth-generation mobile communications. Radio-based mobile networks which are based on the 5G standard are theoretically capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 20 Gbps.

Swisscom has stated that it plans to launch a 5G network in the near future. Sunrise and Salt also plan to operate 5G networks. Because Swiss laws which regulate electromagnetic radiation (electrosmog) levels prevent 5G networks from using the full spectrum of radio frequencies necessary to achieve the highest possible data transfer speeds, it is likely that Swiss 5G networks will initially offer data transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
