How Much Can Football World Cup Travelers Expect to Pay for Mobile Roaming?

June 3, 2026 - Ralf Beyeler

If you are lucky enough to be travelling to the US, Canada, or Mexico to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 games live, take a moment to check into mobile Internet costs before you go. Online comparison service moneyland.ch gives you an overview here.

Starting June 11, 2026, balls will begin roling across World Cup championship pitches in Canada, Mexico, and the US. Many Swiss football fans will likely travel to North American stadiums to experience the games in person.

Most of these travelers will be accompanied by their phones. “If you want to avoid paying high bills for data roaming, you should take time to get informed before you go,” says moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler. Swiss mobile carriers offer data roaming bundles that can be purchased ahead of trips.

Good to know: Some Swiss mobile carriers offer products that include roaming allowances for all three of the FIFA World Cup 2026 host countries. With other carriers, you have to get a different bundle for each country. It is important to check which countries are covered before you travel.

Which mobile plans already include roaming allowances for the world cup host countries?

Before getting additional bundles, first check whether your mobile plan already includes roaming allowances for the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Roaming allowances vary between countries:

  • US and Canada: All mobile plans from Aldi Mobile, CH Mobile, Digital Republic, Galaxus Mobile, Quickline and Swype that have included roaming allowances cover the US and Canada. Some other carriers have some mobile plans that cover the US and Canada, but also have plans with roaming allowances that do not include those countries.
  • Mexico: Very few Swiss mobile plans include roaming allowances for Mexico. Only Swisscom, Salt, M-Tel, Post Mobile and Yallo offer mobile plans with roaming allowances that include Mexico.

Table 1 in the PDF gives you an overview of mobile plans with included roaming allowances for the three FIFA World Cup 2026 host countries.

In most cases, subscribing to a mobile plan with included roaming just for the world cup is not worth it. Getting one or more roaming bundles is cheaper.

How much does mobile roaming in the world cup host countries cost?

If your mobile plan does not already include roaming allowances, or if the allowance is not sufficient, then you will need to get a data roaming bundle.

Calculations from moneyland.ch (see the methodology box) show that prices vary substantially between carriers and countries. The average cost per-gigabyte ranges between 1.95 francs and 160 francs.

The graph below shows the average price per gigabyte at the cheapest carriers, as well as the three big Swiss telecom providers:

The biggest Swiss mobile carrier Swisscom places a strong focus on country-specific bundles. These bundles are valid in just one country. For travel to a single world cup host country, using a country-specific bundle is cheaper than getting a bundle that covers multiple countries. In addition to Swisscom, Salt also makes heavy use of country-specific bundles in its product lineup.

Table 2 in the PDF shows the average cost per gigabyte for data roaming in the three world cup host countries across all carriers included in the analysis.

What should I pay attention to if I travel to multiple host countries?

If your world cup tour will include Mexico in addition to Canada and the US, then special attention is required. Firstly, very few mobile plans already include roaming allowances for Mexico. Secondly, roaming bundles that cover Mexico do not cover the US and Canada, and vice versa. If you use Salt, you will have to get separate bundles for all three of the host countries. Having to buy several small bundles generally ends up costing more than buying a single large bundle.

Bases for calculations: moneyland.ch calculated the average price per gigabyte based on data usage of between 1000 and 10,000 megabytes (1 to 10 gigabytes). The calculations are based on 100-megabyte segments.
