EDGE

Telecom

EDGE is the abbreviated form of enhanced data rates for GSM evolution.

EDGE is an extension of the GSM standard for mobile communications. It enables higher data transfer rates than GSM and GPRS, allowing for faster Internet connections.

EDGE has been available in Switzerland since 2005. Compared to later mobile communication standards like 3G/UMTS and 4G/LTE, the data transfer rates achievable with EDGE are relatively low. In Switzerland, EDGE data connections are primarily used when no 3G/UMTS or 4G/LTE coverage is available.

All three Swiss network operators provide EDGE coverage. Swisscom and Salt have stated that they will phase out their GSM networks – and therefore EDGE services – in 2020. Sunrise may follow suit.
