Clothes make the man – or rather, the fan. For many dedicated football fans, owning a football jersey is an integral part of the overall sporting experience. For the big sportswear companies, fans’ readiness to pay good money for football shirts translates into a profitable business.
The countdown to the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the US is already in full swing. I found it a fitting occasion to toss a quick glance at the prices that sportswear companies are charging for national team football jerseys. What glanced back at me are prices that could burn a hole in a poor man's wallet.
It is important to mention that the prices in my cost comparison are the sportswear manufacturers’ official prices for Switzerland, insofar as these are available. But depending on which retailer you buy your football shirt from, the prices can be very different from the official price tags. The prices shown in the comparison do not include the printing of a name, number, or competition logo. Adding these features comes at an extra cost.
Swiss national football jerseys are in the middle price range
Fans of the Swiss national football team must be prepared to pay a stately sum for the official football shirt from Puma. Both the red home jersey and the white away jersey have a price tag of 110 francs for adults, and 80 francs for children’s sizes.
To use the term football jersey is somewhat misleading, as the standard fan shirts are a trimmed-down copy of the actual football shirts used by players. If you want the authentic football jersey identical to that worn by the Swiss national team, you will have to shell out 165 francs. The authentic jerseys are only available in adult sizes.
But while the prices for Swiss football shirts may seem steep, the football jerseys from Puma are actually priced in the mid-field. The price tag is similar to that charged for football jerseys from Adidas. Only the authentic jerseys cost five francs less at Adidas.
Nike has the steepest official prices, relieving fans of 125 francs for a standard jersey, and 180 francs for the authentic version. Nike jerseys are used by the national teams of Brasil, England, France, the Netherlands, and the US.
The football jerseys from certain national teams participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 are not officially offered in Switzerland at all. These jerseys come from less-known sportswear brands. Examples include football jerseys from the DRC, Ecuador, Haiti, Iran, Jordan, Cape Verde, Panama, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan.
It is possible that some of these shirts are available in Switzerland through third-party retailers. You also may be able to order directly from the manufacturer and have the jersey delivered to Switzerland.
