I am planning a pregnancy (ideally for next year) and have a question: Which health insurance deductible should I choose ahead of pregnancy? Would it be worth paying higher premiums for a low deductible?

Thanks

Hi there,

If you expect to have healthcare expenses of at least 1500 francs in a given year, then choosing the lowest possible deductible (300 francs) for your compulsory Swiss health insurance is generally the cheaper option.

In Switzerland, the costs associated with pregnancy and childbirth easily add up to several thousand francs. Assuming that most of your pregnancy-related healthcare is received within the same calendar year, switching to a 300-franc deductible could save you a lot of money.

On the other hand, if you expect to spend less than 1500 francs in a given year, then choosing a 2500-franc deductible makes more financial sense.

Best regards from Moneyguru
