Certificates of deposit (CFDs) based on bitcoin provide an alternative for investors who want to take advantage of growth in bitcoin's value, but prefer not to purchase and hold actual bitcoin.

Bitcoin CFDs are issued by a number of investment companies, including AVA Trade and Plus500. Swiss bank Vontobel issues a bitcoin certificate.

Using bitcoin CFDs can be more expensive than buying actual bitcoin because you generally pay a service fee. Like other derivatives, the value of CFDs depends on the creditworthiness of their issuer. If the issuer goes bankrupt, you may lose your investment.
