I have a number of outstanding debts and became unemployed some months ago. The local debt collection office just informed me that they will begin deducting debt repayments from my monthly unemployment benefits. Are they allowed to do that?

Yes. The debt collection office is allowed to deduct debt repayments from your income – including income you receive from unemployment insurance.

As a general rule, the portion of unemployment benefits which you receive after debt-collection deductions should not be lower than the municipal minimum existence level.
