I will be taking a long-awaited extended vacation for 3 months. I have travel insurance which covers my healthcare while I am travelling. Can I put my Swiss health insurance on hold to save the premiums while I am away?

Hi there,

As long as you are registered as a resident of Switzerland you are required to keep your compulsory Swiss health insurance and pay your premiums. You also remain covered against medical emergencies while you travel.

Supplementary health insurance policies can, in some cases, be put on hold (depending on the insurance provider). However, this is only possible when you actually deregister and are not a resident during your absence. Putting your hospital insurance and outpatient insurance policies on hold can be beneficial if you expect to move back to Switzerland within a certain time-frame and do not want to lose your insurance coverage.

Best regards from Moneyguru
