My buddies and I were wondering if you really have to call the police for every little car accident. Some of them think that you only need to call the police for certain types of accidents, like when people are injured. But I seem to recall that you have to call the police for any kind of accident.

Which of us is right? Thanks.

Small car accidents in which no person or animal was injured can generally be settled between the two drivers involved. For this to happen, the at-fault driver must admit their guilt and accept liability for the cost of damages and inform their car insurance provider about the accident.

Situations in which you must call the police after a car accident include:

  • When you cannot find the owner of one of the car's involved (if you damage a parked car and the owner does not show, for example).
  • When you and the owner of the other car involved cannot agree on who is liable for the damages.
  • When there are injuries.
  • When you collide with a wild animal.
  • When the accident happens on the highway.
  • When there is a risk of fire or explosions.
