My girlfriend is fully employed and I stay home and look after our kids. Do her social security contributions cover me as well, or do I have to pay these on top of what she pays?

Because you and your girlfriend are not legally married, the social security office handles you as two individuals for insurance purposes. That means that you have to pay the minimum annual contribution each year separately from the contributions paid by your partner.

If you and your girlfriend were legally married or partnered, you would be considered a combined unit for social security purposes and you would not have to make the minimum contribution if your spouse’s contributions were at least double the minimum annual contribution.
