We are busy building our own home for our family and got construction site insurance to cover the home while it is being built. In the past month we have had several incidents of vandalism which left a large part of the nearly-constructed house covered in graffiti. Can we claim on our insurance for the expense of removing the graffiti and repainting the house?

Hi there,

Builder's risk insurance covers damages to buildings in construction for which no party can be held liable - such as natural hazards, collapsing, theft and vandalism. However, this insurance generally excludes coverage for graffiti.

Some insurers let you add coverage for graffiti under a special agreement on a first-loss basis. Ask your insurance company if this is an option if you feel that graffiti poses a substantial risk in your region.

Best regards from Moneyguru
