I am married to a Swiss guy and recently he has been getting letters from the town his parents live in asking him to help support them financially. They have always managed somewhat poorly and have often tried to bum some money off him, but I didn't think he could be legally obligated to support them. What should we make of this?

Hi there,

In Switzerland, children can be required to provide for their financially insolvent parents, but only if the child in question earns a high income. As a couple, you will have to earn around 180,000 Swiss francs per year in order to be held responsible to support your parents financially.
