What do health insurance companies pay when I have an accident while traveling outside of Switzerland? Do I need extra insurance for this? Thanks

Greetings,

Basic, compulsory Swiss health insurance covers the cost of medical emergencies which occur outside of Switzerland - up to a limit of double the cost of equivalent treatment in your canton of residence.

However, the costs of ambulance transportation outside of Switzerland are not covered. It is also worth noting that the costs of medical treatment can be very high in some countries.

If you do not feel that compulsory insurance coverage would adequately cover the cost of medical care at your destination, consider taking out travel insurance with high medical coverage or extending your coverage with a supplementary outpatient insurance or hospital insurance policy.

Note: If you are employed in Switzerland, accidents are covered by the non-occupation portion of the occupational accident insurance you receive through your employer, and not through your compulsory health insurance. As with compulsory health insurance, accident insurance typically covers hospital costs up to a maximum of twice the cost of the same treatment in Switzerland.

Best regards from Moneyguru
