How much does mandatory Swiss health insurance pay towards the costs of ambulance transportation in Switzerland and overseas? Do I need supplementary insurance to cover this?

Greetings,

Compulsory Swiss health insurance covers 50% of the cost of ambulance transportation up to a maximum benefit of 500 Swiss francs per year. However, this coverage only applies if you are unable to get to a doctor or hospital using other means of transportation (if your condition leaves you unfit to drive or use public transportation).

If medical evacuation is required to save a person from a life-threatening medical condition (like a heart attack), compulsory Swiss health insurance covers up to 5000 francs of the cost of emergency transportation within Switzerland. Medical evacuations outside of Switzerland are not covered.

You can find more complete information in our guide to insurance for emergency transportation & search and rescue.

Best regards from Moneyguru
