My credit card has an "extended warranty" benefit which is supposed to give me longer warranties when I use it to pay for stuff. How exactly does this benefit work?

Hi there,

Some credit cards provide a type of insurance which acts as a warranty for stuff you buy after the manufacturer's warranty expires.

The way this works is that if something you bought and paid for using the credit card breaks down after the manufacturer's warranty has expired, you can send the item in to your credit card issuer or a third-party partner for repair or (if unreparable) replacement.

In this way, the warranty that comes with stuff you buy is extended by the credit card insurance. This insurance usually covers items for 1 or 2 years after the manufacturer's warranty expires. it may cover most items, or only certain types of goods. You will normally have to provide proof that you paid for the item using the eligible credit card.

It is important to note that this warranty extension usually applies to the original manufacturer's warranty. Some retailers extend the manufacturer's warranty with their own retailer warranty or give you the option of paying extra to extend the warranty. If the item you are purchasing is already covered by your credit card's extended warranty, make sure to turn down optional retailer warranties to avoid paying for insurance you don't need.

Viseca - which issues credit cards for cantonal banks and many other Swiss banks, includes extended warranties for most electronic devices and electrical appliances as a complimentary benefit on its silver and gold credit cards. This coverage is automatically applied to purchases made in Switzerland and neighboring countries with a value of CHF 100 or more. It extends the warranty by 1 year up to a limit of CHF 2000 (silver cards) or 2 years up to a limit of CHF 5000 (gold cards). This insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance.

Conèrcard includes extended warranties as a benefit on its Cornèrcard Lady credit card and Cornèrcard Lady prepaid card.
