How much money can I take to Spain with me without declaring it?

We will be vacationing in Spain shortly and want to pay in cash as much as possible (we don’t like paying fees for unnecessary services and prefer to frequent small stores and restaurants). How much cash can we take with us without being hassled at customs?

You can carry up to 10,000 euros (or equivalent foreign currency) into European Union member countries without declaring it.
