Greetings,

All Swiss health insurance providers use direct settlement (tiers payant) for at least part of medical bills. This means the insurance company pays the doctor directly. In the case of hospital stays, insurers are legally required to pay the hospital directly.

Likewise, indirect settlement (tiers garant) is also used by Swiss insurers for some medical expenses. In this case, you pay bills upfront and then file an insurance claim for reimbursement. How quickly you are reimbursed depends entirely on which health insurance company you are insured by. Most insurers settle claims fairly quickly after receiving them. However, others tend to delay reimbursement for longer periods.

The unbiased moneyland.ch health insurance comparison provides information on what portion of claims are settled directly and indirectly by different health insurance companies (under "Payment methods" on product information pages). It also provides a customer satisfaction rating for reimbursement periods.
