If I lend my niece a large amount of money, would this count as an early inheritance / gift, as in: will the money be subject to inheritance / gift tax?

Hi there,

Inheritance tax laws vary between cantons, so it would be advisable to speak to tax advisors who specialize in the tax laws of yours and your niece's cantons of residence. As a general guideline, the interest charged for a private loan as per the loan agreement is a deciding factor in determining whether or not a loan might be viewed as a gift or early inheritance. An interest-free loan, for example, may well be considered a gift by tax authorities.
