I just applied for a Swiss "household" insurance" policy to cover my personal property but the insurance company wants to sell me this insruance in a package deal with personal liability insurance. Is that extra insurance necessary or are they trying to score extra premiums for insurance that I don't even need?

Greetings,

Personal liability insurance is not compulsory in Switzerland, but it is an affordable way to protect yourself from potentially devastating losses.

While household insurance is useful in that it covers your personal property against theft and hazards like fire and water damage, personal liability insurance protects your finances by covering damages which you inflict on third parties and their property.

Many Swiss landlords will not rent out their properties to tenants which do not have personal liability insurance.

Swiss insurance providers often bundle household and personal liability insurance and apply mutliple-policy discounts to premiums. Because the coverage which liability insurance provides is very comprehensive in relation to the low premiums charged, getting this insurance is highly recommended.
