Is roadside assistance insurance worth it?

Hi everyone,

I'll be driving around Europe in summer and have been considering getting some kind of roadside assistance insurance in case my old jalopy misbehaves. But I am not sure if paying for roadside assistance is worth it or if I would be better off just paying cash if and when a breakdown happens.

What do you recommend?

Before subscribing to roadside assistance, check if your car insurance already includes insurance for roadside assistance. Swiss car insurance providers generally either include this service in their car insurance offers, or offer it as an optional insurance rider.

If your car insurance includes this coverage, you can call the number provided if you are every in need of roadside assistance. The insurance company will organize roadside assistance from a local service provider in your area, and cover the cost.

Typically, the roadside assistance insurance you get with Swiss car insurance is limited to countries in EFTA, the EU, and the UK. The number of times you can use the benefit is normally also limited (to 1 or 2 roadside assistance claims per year, for example).
