While we were away for the weekend, some freaks sprayed the wrought iron gate in front of our rented home with grafiti and also damaged it with a hammer or something. Do I have to pay to repair or replace it? Can my private liability insurance pay?

Greetings,

You are only liable for damages which you personally inflict on a third party's property. In the case of vandalism, the vandals are liable to pay for damages which they inflict. You personal liability insurance provider will not pay for damages which you did not inflict, nor will it pay for deliberately inflicted damages (like graffiti).

If the vandals cannot be traced, as is often the case, the building's owner still cannot hold you as the renter liable for damages caused by third-parties.
