I use the Internet to buy airline tickets, coupons and occasionally to shop for specific items. Which debit card is more widely accepted for online payments in Switzerland – the Maestro card or the Postfinance card?

In Switzerland, only PostFinance debit cards are widely accepted by online merchants. Few (if any) online merchants accept Maestro cards and V-Pay cards.

Update 2020: Swiss banks are currently extending/upgrading their Maestro debit cards to the Debit Mastercard and/or the Visa Debit cards.

The Debit Mastercard and the Visa Debit add card-not-present transaction functionality. This means you can use them to make online purchases.

While the PostFinance card can be used to pay for purchases from many Swiss online merchants, the Debit Mastercard and the Visa Debit can be used to pay for purchases from most online merchants worldwide which accept Mastercard or Visa respectively.
