I just started au pairing for a family in Switzerland. I am used to making a lot of payments on credit and would like to get a Swiss credit card. Which credit cards are available to au pairs?

Hi there,

Because au pairs typically remain in Switzerland for relatively short terms, getting a credit card is rarely worth the trouble because contracts are normally annual. If you have very short-term residence, credit card issuers may not be keen on providing you with credit because of the risk.

Debit cards - such as those issued when you open a private account at  a Swiss bank - are more widely accepted and some (Postfinance debit cards) can be used to pay at many Swiss online merchants.

Prepaid cards provide another alternative, and the chances of your application being accepted are higher because they are a no-risk product. You can use prepaid cards for almost all of the tasks for which you would normally use a credit card. All Swiss prepaid cards are included in the moneyland.ch credit card comparison.

If you absolutely need a credit card, consider getting a card with a low annual fee or none at all. You can use the moneyland.ch credit card comparison to compare the benefits and costs of Swiss credit cards.
