Hi ladies, gents,

I just got a job in Switzerland but decided to continue living in Germany. Can you tell me how the Swiss health insurance system works? Which insurance company would you recommend for a cross-border worker? What about accident insurance?

Kind regards

If you work in Switzerland but live in Germany, Italy, France or Austria, you have the option of choosing whether you want to get health insurance in Switzerland or in your country of residence.

It is important to consider that Swiss health insurance primarily covers the cost of medical care received in Switzerland. Coverage for medical care abroad is limited to medical emergencies. For this reason, getting Swiss health insurance only makes sense if, for example, you live near the Swiss border and receive treatment at Swiss hospital or doctors.

Swiss basic health insurance premiums for people living outside of Switzerland are determined on a per-country basis. You can find a full list which includes the current premiums for Germany on the Priminfo website run by the Swiss federal government.

Accident insurance - both occupational and non-occupational - is provided by your Swiss employer as long as you are employed at least 20% (8 hours per week). You will receive this insurance whether you choose to get health insurance in Switzerland or Germany.

You can compare the costs of Swiss health insurance policies, see customer satisfaction ratings and find detailed information about each policy using the comprehensive and unbiased Swiss health insurance comparison on moneyland.ch.
