I moved to Switzerland for a job 6 months ago and just my luck, my employer just declared bankruptcy. So now I am stuck wondering whether or not I can claim Swiss unemployment money. Can I?

Hi there,

In order to be eligible for unemployment benefits from a Swiss unemployment office, you have to have paid premiums for at least 12 months within the 2 years prior to your becoming unemployed.

Seeing that you only became employed in Switzerland 6 months prior to your employer's bankruptcy, you probably do not meet the criteria. However, it may be worth enquiring into your specific situation at your cantonal unemployment office.

Best regards from Moneyguru
