Trading on emerging stock exchanges

I know that the NYSE, LSE and Frankfurt Börse are the go to trading destinations for average investors. Personally however, I am interested in investing in less global businesses in emerging markets. I have an average tolerance for risk, but I am keen on earning decent returns. Has anyone traded on smaller exchanges in Asia, Africa, South America or the CIS? I’d be very interested in hearing your experiences and recommendations. Thanks all.
