Hi - I read on the forum that the maximum gross unemployment allowance is calculated based on the insured gross salary (80% of 148,000 CHF/year).

In my situation, I have a gross salary that exceeds the insured gross salary but I have spent 6 months in unpaid leave before being let go. Let's assume I have an annual gross salary of 240,000 CHF. Does it mean that because of my unpaid leave, the insured gross salary will be 120,000 (half my gross salary) and my gross unemployment allowance will be 80% *10,000/month

Thanks for explaining the implications of unpaid leave on insured gross salary and unemployment allowance.

To the best of my knowledge, the sabbatical would not affect the size of your unemployment benefits. The benefit would be equal to either 70% (no dependents) or 80% (with dependents) of the insured part of your last salary.

However, a sabbatical could affect your entitlement to unemployment benefits. Because contributions to unemployment insurance are only paid during the first 31 days of your sabbatical, the remaining time (5 months, in your case) don't count towards the minimum period (12 out of the past 24 months) that you have to contribute in order to become eligible for unemployment benefits. If you contributed for at least 12 out of the past 24 months, then that isn't an issue.
