My wife wants to lower her work hours to 60% for about 1 year after having our baby. I am curious as to whether she could claim unemployment insurance to cover the 40% reduction in her salary. Could that work?

Hi there,

Although this is technically possible, it is not a practical solution. When you receive unemployment benefits, you are required to apply for jobs (and accept employment offers) or otherwise imrpove your employability though various programs. These activities can take a lot of your time, partially defeating the purpose of your reducing your work hours in the first place.
