When can I terminate a car insurance policy?

I want to terminate my car insurance and move to another insurance company with better rates. How can I terminate the policy?

Car insurance policies can normally only be terminated when the insurance term ends (typically a tthe end of one year). You are normally required to give notice of termination 3 months in advance to prevent the policy being extended for another year.

When you sell or otherwise dispose of the insured car, you can terminate the policy immediately without having to wait until the term ends. You also get reimbursed for any unused premiums you have paid in advance.
