Hi Chipmunk,

Only people who use credit or take out loans are listed by these credit bureaus. When you activate the installment payment option on their credit card, or get a credit card which automatically lets you carry a balance, your card issuer sends a notice to at least one of these credit bureaus. If you take out a personal loan or lease a car, your details are reported to a credit bureau. Even private account overdrafts may be reported. Being listed is not necessarily a negative thing. A listing simply shows that you have made use of credit.

Each recorded loan is scored based on your credit behavior, meaning the way in which you go about paying your debts. Together these scores make up your credit score. The moneyland.ch guide to ZEK credit scores provides a breakdown of credit scores used by the ZEK and explains what they mean.

In addition to the government-mandated credit bureaus, there are also private credit bureaus (namely, CRIF and Intrum Justitia) which also record credit behavior. These bureaus may record information other than loan data, such as failure to pay bills.

Best regards from Moneyguru
