HBO Max will soon be available in Switzerland. The streaming service is set to launch in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Luxemburg, and Austria on January 13, 2026. HBO Max has already been available in the French and Dutch markets for some time.
This moneyland.ch article provides all of the most important information about HBO Max in Switzerland.
What is HBO Max?
HBO was founded as a pay TV service in the US in 1972. HBO made a name for itself with its original TV series, which have also been broadcast by many European TV stations. Today, HBO is part of the Warner Bros media group. The HBO Max streaming service was first launched in the US in 2020.
Which subscriptions will HBO Max offer in Switzerland?
HBO Max will offer three different subscriptions: Basic, Standard, and Premium. In addition to the price, the subscriptions also differ with regards to the maximum image resolution, the number of devices that can be used at the same time, and the number of downloads you can make. However, the video content itself is exactly the same across all three subscriptions.
The Basic plan includes advertisements, and costs 9.90 francs per month. The Standard plan costs 16.90 francs per month, and the Premium plan costs a substantial 23.90 francs per month. For an additional 7.00 francs per month, you can add a supplementary sports add-on that lets you watch channels like Eurosport 1 and 2, among others.
Which movies and series can I watch on HBO Max?
HBO Max includes videos from Warner Bros, DC, Max Originals, and Discovery. Among others, this include popular movies and series like:
- Barbie
- Conjuring 4: Last Rites
- It: Welcome to Derry
- Friends
- Harry Potter (all parts)
- Lord of the Rings (all parts)
- Superman
- The Batman
- Gossip Girl
- Vampire Diaries
- Young Sheldon
“In the US, HBO has long been known for quality series,” observes moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler.
What does the Sports add-on include?
The Sports add-on costs 7.00 francs per month, and is only available in combination with an HBO Max subscription. You cannot get just the sports package on its own.
The add-on lets you watch Eurosport 1 and 2, as well as cycling and tennis tournaments like the Australian Open and the Tour de France.
Will the launch of HBO Max affect the Sky Show streaming service?
Up until now, most movies and series from HBO were available to Swiss consumers in the Sky Show streaming service. From January 2026, much of this content will only be offered on HBO Max. But Sky has told Swiss newspapers Watson and 20 Minuten that some of the content – including popular series like House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Euphoria will remain available on Sky Show.
How does HBO Max pricing compare to other streaming services?
A comparison with competing streaming services shows that HBO Max’s prices sit in mid-field. Its subscriptions are much cheaper than those offered by the market leader Netflix. The HBO Max Premium subscription is expensive compared to offers from the cheapest streaming services like Netzkino Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. An interesting observation is that HBO Max’s pricing is very similar to that of the Disney Plus streaming service.
“Customers should be aware that streaming services often have exclusive content. Getting a cheap video streaming subscription will not do you any good if it does not include the shows you want to watch,” advises telecom expert Ralf Beyeler.

Is HBO MAX cheaper in other countries?
The January 2026 launch of HBO Max in Switzerland will be accompanied by launches in a number of other countries, including Germany and Austria. The prices for those countries are much lower than the prices in Switzerland, at 5.99 euros per month for the Basic plan (6.99 euros from 2027), 11.99 euros for the Standard plan (12.99 euros from 2027), and 16.99 euros for the Premium plan (17.99 euros from 2027). The Sports add-on costs 3.00 euros per month – half as much as in Switzerland.
“As with other streaming services like Netflix, customers in Switzerland have to pay a lot more for HBO Max than those in neighboring countries,” explains Ralf Beyeler. “Many streaming service providers try to take advantage of the higher purchasing power of Swiss consumers. Apparently, consumers are prepared to accept the relatively high prices.”
