Video streaming service Netflix is raising its prices with immediate effect. The US-based company announced on Thursday that the prices of all subscription models will go up by two francs per month. In terms of percentages, the cheapest subscription is the hardest hit by the price hike, with the monthly fee going up by 15.5 percent.
Netflix says that the higher prices apply to all new subscriptions with immediate effect. Existing customers will be informed about the date on which their subscription fees will go up.
Netflix competitors have also raised their prices
Since video streaming services have launched in Switzerland, their prices have steadily gone up. When Netflix first entered the Swiss market, its most affordable Basic subscription cost 11.90 francs per month, with the Standard plan costing 12.90 francs and the Premium plan costing 17.90 francs. Today, the Standard plan costs 78 percent more, and the Premium plan costs 67 more. The price increase for the basic plan has been more moderate, at 25 percent. Netflix last raised its prices in April 2024.
Other streaming services also recently raised their prices. The prices of Disney plus subscriptions went up again this year, close on the tail of another price hike in November 2024.
How Netflix compares to other streaming services
A price comparison with other streaming services shows that Netflix has the most expensive streaming subscriptions in Switzerland, by a wide margin. Its Premium plan is disproportionately expensive compared to other streaming subscriptions with 4K resolution.
