Premiums For Supplementary Hospital Insurance Decline In 2014

December 2, 2014

The fact that health insurance premiums for basic compulsory coverage increase year on year is well known. In 2014, premiums as a whole have gone up 2.4 percent compared to the previous year.

What many people may not know is that premiums for supplementary hospital insurance have sunk by 10.4 percent compared to those charged in 2013.

On average, premiums for general ward hospital insurance dropped by 26.9 percent, while premiums for semi-private insurance decreased by 3.3% and premiums for private ward insurance are down by 2.7%.

As a whole, health insurance premiums for basic obligatory insurance and supplementary insurance coverage combined sunk by 0.8 percent in 2014 compared to the previous year.

The health insurance premium index provided by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office scored 2014 at 169 points (1999 had a 100-point score). However, the index does not account for outpatient insurance premiums due to comparison difficulties.
