Swiss Contentment Survey 2025

July 15, 2025 - Dan Urner

Switzerland’s residents are generally content with their lives. But contentment varies between different aspects of life in Switzerland, as a representative moneyland.ch survey shows. Contentment with politics and personal finances is comparatively low.

How content are Swiss with their lives? A representative survey conducted by moneyland.ch aimed to answer that question. A total of 1500 participants across German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland were asked to rate their contentment with different aspects of life in Switzerland.

The results show that the country’s residents are generally satisfied with their lives. When asked about their overall contentment with their lives, survey participants gave a rating of 7.3 out of 10 points, on average. That is the same rating given in the 2023 survey.

Older participants are more content

The generations above the age of 50 are the most content, as a look at ratings across different age groups shows. While residents between 18 and 49 years old rated their overall contentment at 7.1 points, on average, the average rating across participants between the ages of 50 and 74 was 7.5 points.

Differences between genders and linguistic regions are smaller. The average rating for overall contentment is 7.3 for women and 7.2 for men. Participants in German-speaking Switzerland (7.3 points) rate their contentment levels slightly higher than those in the Romandie (7.2 points).

Swiss are most content with their children and parents

Swiss are most content with their families, with participants rating their contentment with their children at 7.9 points, on average, and contentment with their parents at 7.5 points.

Participants in French-speaking Switzerland are exceptionally content with their children (8.2 points) and parents (7.7 points). Residents of German-speaking Switzerland rate their contentment with their children and parents at 7.7 and 7.4 points respectively.

Table 1: Contentment in Switzerland (top 10)

Aspect Ratings 2025 Ratings 2023
Children 7.9 7.7
Parents 7.5 7.4
Life in general 7.3 7.3
Education 7.2 7.2
Relationships 7.2 7.2
Doctor 7.2 7.1
Home 7.1 7.2
Bank 7.1 6.9
Internet service provider 7.1 6.9
Work colleagues 7.0 6.9

The results of the 2025 survey are similar to the last moneyland.ch Swiss contentment survey. In 2023 too, children and parents topped the contentment ratings, but the ratings were lower than this year’s. While contentment with banks, Internet service providers, and work colleagues received slightly higher ratings this year, contentment with living quarters has gone down somewhat.

Discontentment with politics

Switzerland’s political landscape once again took the bottom end of the contentment ladder, garnering just 5.5 points, on average. Contentment with the Federal Council is only slightly higher, at 5.6 points. Swiss are also unsatisfied with their personal financial situations (5.7 points) and their salaries (5.9 points).

Discontentment with politics is particularly widespread in more rural areas. The average rating given by participants in municipalities with less than 2000 residents is just 4.9 points for Swiss politicians and 5.0 points for the Federal Council.

Contentment with one’s personal financial situation and salary increases with wealth. Participants with less than 20,000 francs of assets rate their contentment with their financial situation with just 4.6 points, on average, compared to 7.6 points among residents with at least 1 million francs of assets. Men (6.0 points) are also more satisfied with their personal finances than women (5.5 points).

Table 2: Discontentment in Switzerland (the lowest contentment ratings)

Aspect Ratings 2025 Ratings 2023
Swiss politicians 5.5 5.3
Federal Council 5.6 5.5
Personal
financial
situation
5.7 5.9
Salary 5.9 6.0
Employer 6.5 6.5
Religious community 6.5 Not rated¹
Love life 6.5 6.6
Quality of life 6.6 Not rated²
Job 6.7 6.7
Municipality 6.7 6.5

The 2023 survey only inquired about contentment with churches, but not contentment with religious communities.

The 2023 survey did not inquire about quality of life.

The aspects of life in Switzerland that received low ratings in this year’s survey also received relatively low ratings in the 2023 survey. While Swiss politicians and the Federal Council received slightly higher ratings in this year’s survey, contentment with personal financial situations and salaries is lower than it was in the last survey.

Residents of French-speaking Switzerland are less satisfied with public transportation

In the last Swiss contentment survey, public transportation was one of the aspects with the lowest contentment. Compared to 2023, contentment with public transportation has increased somewhat, garnering 6.8 points instead of 6.5 points.

The divide between linguistic regions is particularly pronounced when it comes to contentment with public transportation. The average contentment rating is 7.0 points across residents of German-speaking Switzerland compared to just 6.5 points across residents of the Romandie. The notion that French-speaking regions have been somewhat neglected with regards to railway infrastructure may provide a possible explanation for this discrepancy.
