I've heard that 500 euro banknotes aren't well accepted by merchants in euro countries. I've never experienced this personally, but have only used them for big payments (hotels, etc.). Would you recommend avoiding 500 euro bills or is the info being circulated misleading?

Hi there,

Merchants in most countries are reluctant to accept banknotes with very large denominations. The main reason for this is that accepting large bills may require the return of a large amount of change. Merchants may also have concerns about counterfeit bills when accepting high-denomination banknotes.

Lower-denomination banknotes are typically better received by merchants - particularly if you patronize small shops, restaurants and hotels while traveling.

Best regards from Moneyguru
