Are there any benefits to joining a labour union in Switzerland? If so, what are they?
Hi there,
Large numbers fo members provides labor unions with more leverage in pushing for overall improvements in wage or working conditions. However, this benefit may or may not affect you on a personal level.
However, you generally benefit from consultation and employment dispute resolution. For example, a labor union can help to mediate disputes with your emplyoer if you feel that you have been laid off or fired unfairly.
Other soft benefits for members include discounts and deals on many different good and services. For example, Bank Cler (Bank Coop) offers discounted banking services and special mortgage conditions to memebers of the Unia labour union. Unia members also benefit from a 15% discount on car insurance, household and personal liability insurance and travel insurance from Smile Direct. Syna labour union members benefit from health insurance discounts from CSS, Helsana and Sanitas, and also get special insurance conditions at Zurich Insurance.
Some labor unions also organize social events and continuin education programs which may appeal to those looking to broaden their social networks or improve their skills.
In every case, it is important to compare the benefits you receive with the membership fees you pay to participate. For example, Unia charges a monthly membership fee of between CHF 12.70 and CHF 50.80, depending on your salary. Syna charges between CHF 11.50 and CHF 36.50, depending on your salary.
