Is it possible to change to another health insurance company if I still owe money for premiums to my current health insurance company?

Hi there,

You cannot terminate your compulsory Swiss health insurance policy until you have fully paid your premiums and any other money owed to your insurer (deductible or coinsurance payments, for example).

This normally applies to supplementary health insurance policies as well.

If you plan to switch to another health insurance provider at the end of the year (or June in the case of standard policies with 300-franc deductibles), make sure that you have paid off all money owed to your current insurance provider in full well ahead of the notice period.

Many insurance providers will let you switch to a managed care version of your existing policy in any given month. If you have an expensive standard model policy and find it difficult to pay your premiums, moving to a family doctor, HMO or Telmed policy can cut the cost of premiums considerably.

You can compare the costs of different policy models offered by your insurer using the moneyland.ch health insurance comparison.

Best regards from Moneyguru
